| The
Writeup: Fay Wray is recognized as the first "scream
queen" of the sound era of filmmaking, with her most
famous role coming in the 1933 epic King Kong. At first an
actress in silent films, Fay starred in such films as The
Man in the Saddle (1926), The Wild Horse Stampede (1926),
Loco Luck (1927), and Spurs and Saddles (1927). She is most
proud of her work in the opus The Wedding March (1928), a
film that went way over budget and was eventually split in
two, but her dramatic work has always been overshadowed by
her work in the horror genre. She worked on a number of horror/thrillers
in the beginning of the talkie era, including The Finger Points
(1931), The Unholy Garden (1931), Doctor X (1932), The Most
Dangerous Game (1932), The Vampire Bat (1933), and Mystery
of the Wax Museum (1933) before King Kong made it's debut
and made Fay a star while at the same time confining her success
to that genre. She desperately wanted to dispel the notion
that she was a so called scream queen, but subsequent jobs
in prestige films like The Affairs of Cellini (1934) and The
Richest Girl in the World (1934) did little to help her image
or her career for that matter. No doubt about it though, she
remained a star until she retired from film in 1942 after
marrying Robert Riskin. Despite this retirement, she made
a brief return to film in supporting roles in the 50s, appearing
in movies like Small Town Girl (1953), Small Town Girl (1953)
and Tammy and the Bachelor (1957). |
