| The
Writeup: A talented actress, Esther's career didn't
begin until she was well into what you would call mid life.
She made her feature film debut in Nothing But a Man (1964),
playing a bit part, but it wouldn't be until the 70s that
you could say her Hollywood career officially began. That
year she appeared on the soap opera One Life to Live (1971)
in a small role for a short time. The very next year she was
cast as Florida Evans on the popular sitcom Maude (1972).
She played the role for two seasons and was then given her
own spinoff series, Good Times. First airing in the fall of
1974, Good Times became a huge hit on the strength of memorable
character's like J.J. Evans (played by Jimmie Walker) and
Esther's Florida Evans. The series also featured Janet Jackson
playing Penny Woods for it's last two seasons. Esther has
also appeared as a series regular on the show Singer & Sons
(1990), but it was quickly canceled. Her feature film experience
includes the blaxploitation flick Cleopatra Jones (1973),
P.K. and the Kid (1987), Driving Miss Daisy (1989), How to
Make an American Quilt (1995), and Rosewood (1997). She passed
away in 1998 due to complications from diabetes. |
