Writeup: Throughout her long and distinguished career,
which spanned nearly 55 years, Elsa appeared in 57 feature
films, earning multiple awards for her work, and gaining the
adoration of fans all around the world. Born in England, she
began her career in foreign films like The Constant Nymph
(1928), The Love Habit (1931), The Officer's Mess (1931),
The Private Life of Henry VIII (1933), and The Private Life
of Don Juan (1934). These last two garnered the attention
of James Whale, who cast her as the Monster's Mate/Mary Shelley
in the impressively popular film The Bride Of Frankenstein,
which also happened to make her into a star in America. It
was her first appearance in an American film and she knocked
it out of the park you might say. Impressive work indeed.
She would go on to star in countless films over the next 45
years, including Ladies in Retirement (1941), Forever and
a Day (1943), The Spiral Staircase (1946), The Razor's Edge
(1946), The Bishop's Wife (1947), The Secret Garden (1949),
The Secret Garden (1949, Oscar nominated for Best Supporting
Actress), The Petty Girl (1950), The Girls of Pleasure Island
(1953), Witness for the Prosecution (1957, Oscar nominated
for Best Supporting Actress), Pajama Party (1964), Blackbeard's
Ghost (1968), Willard (1971), and her final film, Die Laughing
