| The
Writeup: Dorothy Lamour built an image as the "sarong
girl" of Hollywood in the 1930s and extended it into
a long and fruitful career that spanned decades. After being
signed by Paramount she made her feature film debut with a
bit part in College Holiday (1936). It was that very same
year's The Jungle Princess (1936) that started her on the
road to stardom, and the road continued with The Hurricane
(1937) for directory John Ford. She was busy for the rest
of the decade, starring in films like Thrill of a Lifetime
(1937), The Big Broadcast of 1938 (1938), Her Jungle Love
(1938), Spawn of the North (1938), St. Louis Blues (1939)
and Man About Town (1939). Almost exclusively appearing in
lighthearted comedies and musicals, Dorothy did have a few
dramatic roles in her career, including Chad Hanna (1940)
and Johnny Apollo (1940). 1940 also saw her cast opposite
Bob Hope and Bing Crosby in Road to Singapore (1940), the
beginning of what would become one of moviedom's longest and
most profitable franchise's. She subsequently appeared in
the road pictures Road to Zanzibar (1941), Road to Morocco
(1942), Road to Utopia (1945), Road to Rio (1947), Road to
Bali (1952), and, much later, The Road to Hong Kong (1962),
in addition to appearing on a number of Bob Hope TV specials.
As her movie work petered out in the 50s Dorothy turned to
night clubs and the stage, even touring in Hello, Dolly! for
a period. |
