| The
Writeup: Dorothy Dandridge began her career as a child
performer and made her feature film debut with a bit part
in the Marx Brothers film A Day at the Races (1937). Throughout
the 40s she had small roles in a number of films, including
Lady from Louisiana (1941), Bahama Passage (1941), Drums of
the Congo (1942), Since You Went Away (1944), Pillow to Post
(1945) and Ebony Parade (1947). She sang in a number of these
films, showing her skills as a musical performer and leading
to a club performing career for her. However, just as often
she was pigeonholed in stereotypical black actress roles (it's
tough for black actress to make an impact nowadays, imagine
how it was in the 40s and 50s). She played the title character
in the musical Carmen Jones (1954) and earned an Oscar nomination
for Best Actress, but was still unable to achieve true stardom
due to the lack of roles available to black actresses, even
those as talented as Dorothy. She made her last film, The
Murder Men, in 1961 and declared bankruptcy only one year
later. In 1965, beset by personal problems, she committed
suicide by drug overdose. |
