Writeup: Diana Ross is best known as a singer, but
she also led a brief acting career with a few highlights.
As a teenager Diana sang in the choir at her local baptist
church, and after graduating high school she and her two friends
Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson landed an audition for Berry
Gordy at Motown Records. They knocked his socks off, landed
a recording contract and Diana Ross and The Supremes were
born. They went on to become one of the biggest groups of
the 60s. In 1970 Diana went solo and also began pursuing an
acting career. Her first role was as Billie Holiday in Lady
Sings the Blues (1972), a role that earned her an Oscar nomination,
not bad for a first timer. Follow up roles in Mahogany (1975)
and The Wiz (1978) didn't really pan out and her acting career,
at least in feature films, was over. She has since seen her
career suffer, she never really returned to the heights of
Diana Ross and The Supremes. |
