| The
Writeup: Cyd Charisse was a dancing sensation, destined
from a very young age to be a dancer of some sort. A ballet
prodigy from childhood, she joined the prestigious Ballet
Russe at the age of 13. At 18, she married her dance teacher
Nico Charisse and made her film debut in a number of musical
shorts in 1941. Her first feature was Something to Shout About
(1943), where she was billed as Lily Norwood. She used that
same name in a few more bit parts in the next couple of years
before being signed by MGM in 1946 and being renamed Cyd Charisse.
In the next five years she would appear in numerous supporting
roles in a surprising amount of movies, including The Harvey
Girls (1946), Ziegfeld Follies (1946), Three Wise Fools (1946),
Till the Clouds Roll By (1946), The Unfinished Dance (1947),
Words and Music (1948), and The Kissing Bandit (1949). It
wasn't until 1952's Gene Kelly sensation Singin' In The Rain
that Cyd really broke out big time. She subsequently appeared
in The Band Wagon (1953), Sombrero (1953) and Deep in My Heart
(1954), wowing audiences with her dance moves. The mid 50s
witnessed the decline of musicals in Hollywood, and at MGM
specifically, so Cyd was forced to rely on her dramatic talents.
While she was a skillful actress, she was like so many others
in Hollywood without her ability to stand above everyone with
her dance. She starred in such films as Party Girl (1958),
Black Tights (1960), Five Golden Hours (1961), Two Weeks in
Another Town (1962), Assassination in Rome (1965), The Silencers
(1966) and Maroc 7 (1967) before essentially retiring, only
appearing in three more films in her career. |
