| The
Writeup: Clara Bow is the reason the term It Girl
was invented. She was the very first It Girl, appearing in
the 1927 film It which explored the possibilities that some
girls possessed It and others didn't. Clara moved to Hollywood
in her teens and found work in small, independent pics. She
starred in a number of pics in the mid 20s before moving to
Paramount in 1925 with her producer and mentor B.P. Schulberg.
Paramount began to promote her like the star she would become,
and bigger, better films followed. Some of her best pictures
there include Mantrap (1926), Kid Boots (1926), Children Of
Divorce (1927), Get Your Man (1927), the aforementioned It,
Wings (1927 - the first best picture winner), Red Hair (1928)
and Ladies Of The Mob (1928). With the advent of sound in
the movies Bow developed something of a fear of speaking on
film, due to her Brooklyn accent, and her behavior became
erratic and unstable. Her films in the early 30s were unsuccessful
and she was dropped by Paramount. She moved over to Fox in
1932 and gave a number of good performances, but it was clear
her time had passed, she was no longer in demand by audiences,
and she retired from film. |
