| The
Writeup: A lovely English actress with Shakespearean
training, Claire Bloom debuted in the 1948 film The Blind
Goddess (1948) but wouldn't become a big name on the international
scene until she was cast in Charlie Chaplin's Limelight (1952),
playing the ingenue Thereza. She has never been a box office
star, but has always delivered strong performances. Other
feature films include Richard III (1955, playing The Lady
Anne), The Buccaneer (1958), The Chapman Report (1962), The
Haunting (1963, a movie which would be remade by Dreamworks
into a piece of crap in 1999), The Spy Who Came In from the
Cold (1965, an Oscar nominated pic starring Richard Burton),
A Severed Head (1970), Islands in the Stream (1977), Clash
of the Titans (1981, playing Hera), Crimes and Misdemeanors
(1989), Mad Dogs and Englishmen (1995), and Daylight (1996,
the movie that helped to kill Sylvester Stallone's career,
it was budgeted at $80 million I believe and tanked hard).
She earned three BAFTA noms in her career, for the aforementioned
Limelight (1952, a winner for most promising newcomer), the
TV movie Brideshead Revisited (1981, for best actress), and
the TV movie Shadowlands (1985, another for best actress). |
