Writeup: A talented supporting actress, Celeste Holm
came to films in 1946, debuting in Three Little Girls in Blue
(1946), after a ten year career on stage, during which she
originated the role of Ado Annie in the Broadway production
of Oklahoma! She was awarded a Best Supporting Actress Oscar
for her third role, Elia Kazan's Gentleman's Agreement (1947),
and would earn two more nominations for Best Supporting Actress
in her career. Those films are Come to the Stable (1949) and
All About Eve (1950), a classic. After 1950 she rarely returned
to the big screen, instead turning to television, where she
has established a surprisingly long and fruitful career. First
was the series Honestly, Celeste! (1954), a show she was asked
to carry. It didn't work out, but she wouldn't find herself
without work for long. She subsequently worked on the gameshows
The $64,000 Question (1955) and Who Pays? (1959) before landing
another series, Kilroy (1965). For the rest of her career
she would appear on short lived shows, or have short stays
on soap operas. Her credits include Nancy (1970), Jessie (1984),
Falcon Crest (1985), Christine Cromwell (1989), Loving (1991-92),
Promised Land (1996) and The Beat (2000). She has also appeared
in 20 made for TV movies. |
