| The
Writeup: Billie Burke made her stage debut in London
while still in her teens and eventually made her way over
to Broadway where she became a huge star and eventually attracted
the attention of Florenz Ziegfeld Jr., the legendary producer
of Ziegfield's Follies. The two were married in 1913. In 1916
Billie went to Hollywood and starred in a number of silent
films before returning to Broadway in 1921. Among her projects
were Gloria's Romance (1916 - at the time the most expensive
movie serial ever made, it tanked), Arms and the Girl (1917),
and The Education of Elizabeth (1921) before returning to
Broadway. She stayed there for nearly 10 years, but returned
to Hollywood after her husband was wiped out in the stock
market crash of the great depression era. Her first talkie
was A Bill of Divorcement (1932), and her husband died shortly
thereafter, making working in Hollywood even more important
for her financial life. In an odd twist, she saw herself played
by Myrna Loy in the 1936 film about her husband, The Great
Ziegfield. She even coached Myrna on the part. The high point
of her career is whe she played Glinda, The Good With Of The
North in The Wizard Of Oz (1939). Other films include Craig's
Wife (1936), Merrily We Live (1938), Bridal Suite (1939),
The Captain Is a Lady (1940), Topper Returns (1941), They
All Kissed the Bride (1942), Swing Out, Sister (1945) and
The Barkleys of Broadway (1949). |
