| The
Writeup: Betty Grable came to Hollywood in the 30s
with her mother and was dancing in musicals at the age of
14. Her first experience was in Whoopee! (1930), playing a
Goldwyn Girl. Shortly after that experience Samuel Goldwyn,
a producer, signed her to a contract and she began appearing
in significantly more films. She spent most of the 30s toiling
in bit parts and small supporting roles, aside from a few
good parts in The Gay Divorcee (1934, a Fred Astaire-Ginger
Rogers musical), The Nitwits (1935), and Don't Turn 'Em Loose
(1936). In 1940 Betty received what you would call her big
break. Alice Faye, 20th Century Fox's leading musical star
was sidelined by appendicitis and Betty was picked to fill
in for her as the lead in Down Argentine Way. She subsequently
appeared in Tin Pan Alley opposite Faye later in 1940 and
subsequently received a big buildup by Fox, turning her into
a star. She subsequently appearing in a glut of star vehicles,
mostly lighthearted musicals. She became a favorite pinup
of the GIs in WWII, appearing on a sexy poster. By 1943 she
was the top grossing star in Hollywood, flashing her lovely
legs for hungry American audiences. By the 1950s she was being
overtaken by younger, more vibrant stars and competition from
television, and she retired from film to concentrate on her
nightclub act. |
