Writeup: An original Disney girl, Annette Funicello
was one of the original mouseketeers introduced to the public
the day Disneyland opened, July 17, 1955. She spent four years
on the show, cultivating a down home, friendly image that
would be the basis of her career. During the 50s she also
appeard on the shows The Further Adventures of Spin and Marty
(1957), The New Adventures of Spin and Marty (1958), and Make
Room for Daddy (only 1959). She starred in the Disney film
The Shaggy Dog (1959) as her feature film debut and contributed
a song to The Parent Trap (1961). As the 60s rolled around
she became the queen of beach movies, starring in Beach Party
(1963), Muscle Beach Party (1964), Bikini Beach (1964), Beach
Blanket Bingo (1965), How to Stuff a Wild Bikini (1965), and
Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine (1965). She also starred
in a few non beach movies, including Pajama Party (1964),
The Monkey's Uncle (1965), Fireball 500 (1966) and Thunder
Alley (1967). By the time the 60s were winding down Annette's
career was essesntially over. It seems the public couldn't
accept her as anything other than the friendly mouseketeer,
a severely limiting thing for one's career. |
